Espresso vs. Brewed Coffee: Which Packs More Punch? A Faith-Filled Look at Your Daily Cup

You’ll be surprised. It’s all about the dose.

At Coffee 4 Missions, we hear this question often: “Which has more caffeine—espresso or regular brewed coffee?”

Popular question

The short answer? They’re about the same.

But there’s more to this than just caffeine—especially when we view even a simple cup of coffee through the lens of stewardship, gratitude, and mission.

It’s Not About the Bean—It’s About the Brew Method

ESPRESSO

First of all, let’s clear something up: espresso isn’t a type of bean or roast—it’s a brewing method.

Typical Ristretto of espresso, 15 to 20 mL or ½ to ⅔ of an ounce, from a recent trip we made to Portugal. The lighter brown on top is called the “crema”

The word “espresso” comes from the Italian verb esprimere, meaning “to press out.” It’s a fitting name because espresso is made by pressing hot water through finely ground coffee under pressure—yielding a concentrated shot of bold, rich coffee in just 20–25 seconds.

Because of its flavor and strength, espresso feels more powerful. But ounce for ounce, a “longo” or double shot of espresso (about 1.5 oz) has about the same caffeine as a standard 8–12 oz cup of brewed coffee.

It’s not about one being “stronger.” It’s about how you enjoy it.

And just like how God uniquely gifts each of us for different roles in His Kingdom, espresso and brewed coffee each have their own strengths and purposes.

At Coffee 4 Missions, we roast every bean with care, purpose, and prayer—supporting missions around the world with each bag sold.

Our Espresso Bravo and Espresso Créma Bella are roasted using clean infrared heat, a method that reduces acidity and brings out deeper flavor clarity without the bitterness.

  • Espresso Bravo: Bold, chocolatey, and full-bodied. A solid foundation—much like a faithful servant who holds up others in love and strength.

  • Espresso Créma Bella: Medium bodied, Velvety, smooth, and beautifully balanced. Gentle yet impactful, like the quiet faithfulness of someone walking closely with Christ. (FYI – This is the number one espresso blend we sell to our coffee shops)

Both are low-acid and gentle on the stomach, perfect for daily enjoyment—and for sharing hospitality with others.

Whether drip, French press, or simply a pour-over, one cup will provide about the same amount of caffeine as a shot of espresso

Brewed Favorites for a Steady Walk

Not everyone is an espresso drinker—and that’s okay.

Many of us love starting our mornings quietly with the Lord, coffee mug in hand. Our low-acid brewed blends are ideal companions for that sacred time.

  • Breakfast Blend: Light, clean, and mellow—designed for peaceful mornings with Scripture and prayer.

  • Harvest Morning Blend (our medium-dark classic): Warm, subtley flavored blend of Southern Pecan and Vermont Maple Nut; nutty, and gently bold—a steady roast for a steady walk.

Whether you’re reading your Bible, journaling, or fellowshipping with others, these brews offer comfort, consistency, and a little encouragement with every sip.

What’s the Real Difference?

So should you choose espresso or a traditional brewed cup?

It comes down to taste and rhythm:

  • If your mornings are fast-paced and focused, espresso might suit your stride.

  • If your mornings are slower, prayerful, and reflective, a brewed cup may be your match.

  • Or, blend both worlds—try a “Shot in the Dark” by adding a shot of Espresso Bravo to your brewed coffee.

Need a Little More Energy for the Work Ahead?

Whether you’re running a marathon or preparing a sermon sometimes you need a little extra boost! 👍
  • ⭐️ Brewed, Pour-Over or French Press Coffee Tip: Don’t brew longer—just use more grounds.

  • ⭐️ Espresso Tip: Go double or triple shot—without added bitterness.

  • ⭐️ Fun Twist: Add espresso to hot chocolate or chai—great flavor with a smooth kick.

A Faithful Choice: Low Acid, High Purpose

At Coffee 4 Missions, every coffee we offer—whether it’s a shot of Espresso Créma Bella or a brewed cup of Breakfast Blend— is:

  • Low acid and stomach-friendly

  • Specialty grade and infrared-roasted

  • Crafted by a family of former missionaries

  • Designed to fund gospel missions around the world  (watch this short video)

Because to us, coffee is more than a beverage. It’s a ministry tool. A bridge to conversation. A way to support those carrying the Good News to the ends of the earth.

So whether you’re Team Espresso or Team Brewed, you’re choosing something better—for your body and for the Kingdom.

“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

– 1 Corinthians 10:31
